We’ve designed an educational infographic that shows specific actions we take to ensure safe, responsible recycling and environmental sustainability. These include proactive actions to advance and continuously monitor:

Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Facts

Today, U.S. lead battery recyclers use technologically advanced equipment, processes and protocols to ensure environmental safety. In fact, U.S. lead battery recyclers’ total lead emissions to air are less than 1% of the total U.S. air lead emissions.

On average, U.S. recycling companies:

  • Invested more than $70 million per facility in EHS improvements between 2010-2020, including advanced, high-efficiency air filtration systems to ensure a safe workplace and minimize environmental emissions.
  • Spend about 23% of their annual operating budget on EHS.
  • Have 10% of their on-site employees working in jobs focused on EHS.
  • Devote about 15,000 hours to EHS training every year.
  • Implement effective routine workplace cleaning protocols and equipment maintenance.

Committed to Continuous Improvement

ABR member companies don’t operate in silos. We collaborate and share EHS best practices to advance the industry as a whole. This includes making substantial voluntary investments and holding ourselves accountable through the development of an industry-wide material stewardship program, Lead Battery 360°.
